5 Signs Your Podcast Content is Blending In

Have you ever shared a podcast episode you're really excited about, packed with content you’re confident your audience will love, only to be met with... radio silence? You check the stats: fewer than 100 downloads, a couple of likes on your social media posts, and zero "New Call Booked!" emails in your inbox.

And the worst part? You’re left scratching your head, wondering what you're missing and starting to question if all the effort you’re putting in is even worth it.

Luis Camejo from BizBros is back with us to break down the five signs your podcast content is blending in (and what to do about it) so you can get more listeners choosing your show over the competition with content that dominates the conversation.

Sign 1: Giving the Algorithm Too Much Credit

We've all been there, shaking our fists at the algorithm gods when our podcast content doesn't get the love we think it deserves. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if you've poured your time, energy, and resources into creating content, it should automatically perform well. When it doesn't, it’s normal to point fingers at the algorithm, but here's the deal: "If that time and effort and thing that we create is not relevant to the person that's watching it, they're not gonna watch it," Luis points out.

Think of it like this: even the best chefs don't blame the oven if their dish doesn't turn out perfectly. They refine their recipe and adjust the ingredients. The same goes for your podcast content — it's not just about the effort you put in; it's about making sure your 'recipe' is hyper-relevant to your audience. It’s not the oven that determines the outcome — it’s how you use the oven that determines the outcome. (aka if your audience doesn’t like lemon pie, don’t keep serving them lemon pie and blaming the oven when they don’t like it).

So, ask yourself: Does my podcast content solve a specific problem for my audience? Am I making it easy for listeners to discover my podcast content through clear episode titles, problem-solving descriptions, and the right distribution channels?

If you're doing all these things but still not seeing the engagement or downloads you want, it’s an indicator you’re not being specific enough on the problems you solve. And if you're not hitting these marks, a good place to start is to refine your messaging and optimize your podcast content for visibility, so your audience can't help but tune in.

Sign 2: Not Reading the Right Data

Data — the other four-letter word that some people love and some people hate. But if you're only looking at surface-level metrics like total downloads, views, or likes and comments, you’re missing out on a wealth of insights that will tell you exactly what kind of content your audience wants from you.

Most podcasters and content creators believe that as long as these numbers are growing, they’re on the right track. But Luis disagrees. “You need to start looking at your creation process and your content as a product, because it is a product, under a different set of eyes."

So sure, seeing those download numbers and view counts climb can feel like a win. But if you had a million views, yet 95% of your audience tunes out after the first few minutes, are you really winning? That’s like filling a stadium for a concert only to have everyone leave after the opening act.

To win as a content creator, it's not just about getting people to show up — it's about giving them a reason to stay hooked. By focusing on deeper metrics (for example: watch time or listener consumption), you can understand what's really grabbing the attention of your audience and make adjustments that lead to real success.

Sign 3: Not Mastering Your Craft as a Content Creator

You’ve heard this one before — but what does “mastering your craft” as a creator really mean? We both know true mastery of any subject doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lot of trial and error (and coffee). But some podcasters and content creators fall into the trap of thinking that once they reach a certain level, they don't need to keep improving. But imagine if Michael Phelps stopped training after winning his first gold medal, thinking he'd done enough. He would’ve never become the most decorated Olympian of all time, much less stood a chance against competitors who kept pushing their limits.

The same goes for content creation. Luis challenges, "Have you become the creator that people need you to be yet?" Even if your content is better than the rest, there’s always room for growth. The most successful creators continuously refine their skills, experiment with new formats, and stay curious. Mastery is a journey, not a destination. By constantly improving, you not only keep your podcast content relevant and engaging, but you’ll also be able to deliver a better experience for your audience than others out there who are putting in half the effort but expecting twice the results. Why settle for 'good enough' when you can be great?

Sign 4: Not Being Polarizing

Ah, the fear of someone “unfollowing” you. It's real, but playing it safe only ever leads to one thing: boring podcast content. Many podcast creators think that by avoiding controversial topics, they can attract a wider audience and avoid alienating potential fans. But as Luis points out, "Not enough creators or business owners are being polarizing because of fear."

You’ve heard it before: if you're trying to please everyone, you’ll wind up pleasing no one. But when it comes to your podcast content, are you really tackling bold topics, exploring unique angles, and taking creative risks that make your content unforgettable? Think of it like this — which comedian would you rather spend your money to see: the one who plays it safe with predictable jokes and gets polite laughs, or the one who dives into edgy, thought-provoking material that sparks intense reactions and keeps people talking long after the show?

Being polarizing doesn't mean being negative. It means knowing your beliefs and standing firm in them. When you're true to yourself and take a stand, you attract a passionate and loyal audience who genuinely connects with your message. In today’s podcasting world, it's far more lucrative to have a smaller, more engaged audience who’s obsessed with what you do than a larger, indifferent one. The strongest brands and creators in today’s digital marketplace are those who aren't afraid to be themselves and use their unique voice to create meaningful change in the world.

Sign 5: Creating Content for Views

Chasing higher views on your short-form content or more downloads on your long-form content can feel like the ultimate goal, but it's a trap. Imagine a restaurant that fills its seats every night because it serves trendy, Instagram-worthy small plates but the food itself is bland and forgettable. Sure, the place is packed, but how many of those customers come back for a second meal?

True success as a podcaster is about crafting podcast content that resonates so deeply with your audience, they can’t wait to come back for more (not unlike your favorite restaurant that you can’t wait to go back to, regardless of if it’s a Michelin five star or a hole in the wall). When your podcast content offers genuine value by solving specific problems for your audience, you’ll build a loyal following that sticks around for the long haul.

How to Create Content Listeners Can't Ignore

If any one of these signs sound a little too familiar, don't sweat it. We've all been there. The key is recognizing where you might be blending in and taking steps to create podcast content that stands out. Whether it's diving into your data, mastering your craft, or embracing your true voice, even small changes can lead to big results.
